Brooklyn Aikikai Kids’ Aikido Camp Information
Aikido Camp is for children aged 7 – 12 (or entering 2nd grade at least). No previous martial arts experience is necessary!
Session 1 : July 8 - 12
Session 2 : July 15 - 19
Camp runs Monday to Friday 9 am – 3 pm. The door opens at 8:45 am for drop-off. There is no after-camp program, please be sure to pick up your child before 3:10 pm.
Brooklyn Aikikai is located at 408 Third Avenue in Gowanus, Brooklyn. We are near the corner of Third Avenue and 6th Street, next door to Halyards Bar. We have a bright red door next to a giant wooden door, and a big boulder outside. Can’t miss it.
Each day we will start with about an hour of Aikido – stretches, conditioning exercises, basic techniques, and games. Children will learn how to fall and roll safely. There are no competitions in Aikido and no sparring. Children work with a partner and take turns doing the technique or receiving it. (If you look on our website you will see lots of videos of adults doing Aikido to give you some idea. But don’t worry – the kids won’t be doing anything quite so “dangerous-looking!”) Most days we will have more Aikido in the afternoon.
We will have three field trips during the week: Brooklyn Botanic Gardens to see the bonsai trees, the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the samurai swords and armor, and a local Japanese restaurant for lunch on Friday. We will also be doing some Japanese arts and crafts at the dojo such as origami and ink brush painting.
Children should bring their lunch and water each day and we will eat outside in a local park with plenty of time afterwards for running around and playing.
The cost for the full week of camp is $375. A deposit of $100 is due two weeks before camp. There is a $50 discount (each) for siblings or for anyone paying in cash. Checks can be made payable to Brooklyn Aikikai or you may pay via auto-debit from your bank (Quick Pay, Pop Money, etc.). You may also pay by credit card through our website – please contact me for details.
Children should wear sweatpants and a t-shirt every day to practice in and have clothes for going outside as well. If they already have a white martial arts uniform, they can use that for practice but must have clothes to change into for our other activities. You can also purchase a uniform for $25.
Everyone needs to bring a lunch and water bottle every day.
Space is limited to 15 students.
