Community Programs
At Brooklyn Aikikai, we seek to educate the public about the traditional Japanese arts we practice. An important part of our mission is to reach out to the community and make it possible for adults and children from all walks of life to experience these practices for themselves. Our current community outreach programs:
- On the third Thursday of every month, Brooklyn Aikikai's evening classes are free and open to the public. These classes begin at 5:30 p.m and 6:45 p.m. and are available for anyone aged 12 and up. Individuals should wear loose comfortable clothing (for example: sweatpants and a t-shirt) and should arrive 15 minutes prior to the beginning of class. Senior students will be on hand to help as some of the basic principles and movements of Aikido are introduced. Visitors should note that the use of cell phones and electronic devices is not allowed in the dojo. Please come with an open mind!
- Zen meditation, practiced in the Rinzai manner, is open to the public by way of donation. Please call for more information.
- Brooklyn Aikikai provides scholarships to children in need between the ages of 6 and 12, allowing them to come to classes twice a week for an entire year. Children in our program grow in self-confidence and discipline. They develop physical coordination, and learn to work with partners and within small groups. Respect and proper etiquette are emphasized at all times in our warm, structured environment. Please contact the dojo for an application.
